Li, Radwanska Reach Fourth Round; Muguruza Upsets Wozniacki
Fifth seed Na Li sailed through to the fourth round of the Sony Open Tennis on Saturday, dismissing No. 25 seed Varvara Lepchenko 6-2, 6-4.
For the second straight match at Crandon Park, Li compiled an all-around performance. This year’s Australian Open runner-up won 75 percent of her service points and converted four of her eight break points to win the first-time meeting with the American in 78 minutes.
Li is playing her first tournament since sustaining a left ankle injury during her defeat to Victoria Azarenka in Melbourne. Li began her season by triumphing at the inaugural WTA event in Shenzhen (d. Zakopalova).
Fourth-seeded defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska was tested by Magdalena Rybarikova, but came through with a 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-3 victory in two hours and 23 minutes. Radwanska has won four of her five meetings against the Slovakian and improved to a 21-4 record in 2013, highlighted by back-to-back titles in Auckland (d. Wickmayer) and Sydney (d. Cibulkova).
For a place in the quarterfinals, Radwanska will take on Sloane Stephens. The 16th seed advanced when three-time champion Venus Williams pulled out ahead of their scheduled clash with a lower back injury.
Wild card Garbine Muguruza stunned ninth seed Caroline Wozniacki with a straightforward 6-2, 6-4 victory. Muguruza broke the Indian Wells runner-up four times to seal the upset in 81 minutes. The Spaniard is through to the round of 16 in Miami for the second year in a row.
“It's really disappointing,” Williams said. “This is just the kind of tournament you want to play well at. But I have faced disappointments in my life and my career. It's not the first and probably not the last. I just have to get through it and stay positive.”
Ajla Tomljanovic won a matchup between wild cards, overcoming a slow start to edge 2011 semifinalist Andrea Petkovic 0-6, 6-4, 7-6(1). Tomljanovic surged ahead in the decisive tie-break to prevail in two hours and 28 minutes.
