Lucky Loser Davis Takes Her Chance; Kerber Advances
Lucky loser Lauren Davis made the most of her late entry into the Sony Open Tennis on Friday afternoon, saving three match points to edge wild card and fellow American Madison Keys 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(7) in the second round.
Davis, who replaced two-time champion and second seed Victoria Azarenka an hour before the start of play, trailed 3-6 in the decisive tie-break. Keys denied Davis’ first opportunity at 6-7, but then double faulted on the ensuing point and Davis closed out the hard-fought win in two hours and 43 minutes.
“We kind of have opposite games,” said Davis. “I'm a grinder and good baseliner. She likes to keep the points shorter, [has a] big serve and a big forehand. She kind of plays like a guy. So my game plan was just to go out there and I guess exploit her backhand and hit down the line when she tries to run around the forehand and just keep balls in play.”
Sixth seed Angelique Kerber overcame Francesca Schiavone 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and 18 minutes Kerber notched her first win in three encounters with the Italian, avenging her second-round loss to Schiavone at Crandon Park in 2011.
After dropping the first set, 15th seed Roberta Vinci stepped on the gas to beat Christina McHale 6-7(2), 6-1, 6-3. The Italian will next face No. 20 seed Carla Suarez Navarro, who battled past Jamie Hampton 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(3). Hampton served for the match twice, relinquishing a match point at 6-5 in the third set.
Former Sony Open Tennis champion Svetlana Kuznetsova advanced to the third round, defeating 18th-seeded countrywoman Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 6-4. The 2006 titlist capitalized on five of her nine break points to eliminate Makarova in 85 minutes.
For a place in the fourth round, Kuznetsova will take on No. 12 seed Ana Ivanovic, who cruised past Poland’s Urszula Radwanska 6-2, 6-1.
