Garbine Muguruza: A Disorganized Baker
by Matt Fitzgerald|
Garbine Muguruza is making the most of her wild card entry into the Sony Open Tennis. Arriving at Crandon Park on the back of a fourth-round effort in Indian Wells, the 73rd-ranked Spaniard has equaled her Miami showing from a year ago by reaching the round of 16. She ousted ninth-ranked Caroline Wozniacki, a returning semifinalist, in the third round.
SonyOpenTennis.com caught up with Muguruza to discuss what she’s improved on the past year, her love for cooking and more in this feature Q&A…
For the second straight year, you've knocked out the World No. 9 in Miami. Have you thought about relocating to Miami given your success down here?
No (laughter). I've played so good here. Every time I have to come here, I'm so happy to come to Florida and be in Miami. But I don't think it's going to be my second home.
This week, you stand at a career-high WTA ranking of No. 73. What have you improved the most the past 12 months to get to where you are right now?
I've improved my serve a lot. And I am fighting more in the important points, being mentally stronger in the important moments. I've improved a lot with the way to think on the court.
One of your hobbies is cooking. What is your favorite meal to prepare for friends and family?
I like to prepare these little cakes, called pastelitos. I use fruit and chocolate.
Do you watch any cooking shows on TV and does Spain have a network devoted to food like the United States?
We don't have a network for food, but we have cooking shows, depending on the hour. Sometimes I see them.
If you had to describe yourself to someone who doesn't know you, what would you say?
I would say I am an up-and-down person. Sometimes I'm really happy and other times I'm very sad. I'm also disorganized, haha!
On Twitter, who do you like to follow?
I mostly follow people I know, like my friends, or people I care about.
Who is your favorite Tweeter and why?
I follow Serena. I like what she tweets. Sometimes the pictures are funny and they make me laugh.
