Qureshi/Rojer Win First Masters 1000 Trophy
Fifth seeds Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer lifted their first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy in Miami Saturday, dismissing eighth-seeded Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 6-4, 6-1.
“It’s always nice to be back here. I have a lot of friends and family here,” said Rojer. “If I could win any big tournament, this is right up there. This is pretty much my Grand Slam, so I’m very happy to win it.”
Qureshi and Rojer broke the Poles three times and wiped away all three break points they faced to clinch the title in 56 minutes. The two finished in the winners’ circle after rallying from a set down in their first two matches, which included prevailing 14-12 in a match tie-break over Treat Huey and Dominic Inglot in the second round.
“I feel ecstatic. We both knew we had to go all out to win a title, especially such a big one. I’ve never had such a big result the first quarter of the year, so it feels great,” said Qureshi. “Every day is a new day. We were six match points down in our second match. Everything turned around. Sometimes you need some luck to win these big tournaments. The tennis gods were on our side this tournament, but we also worked hard.”
The Pakistani/Dutch duo captured their third title together, having triumphed in Estoril and Halle last year en route to qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. When asked if they had any special celebration plans, Qureshi said, “I’ve heard so much the past two weeks about Miami but I haven’t been out. Jules went to Ultra Fest when Swedish House Mafia were playing and he didn’t take me. I really hope he has something figured out tonight or I’ll be disappointed!”
Rojer added, “I’m going to make a phone call to the Dutch Davis Cup captain to see if I can arrive a day later, because I would like to properly celebrate our win.”
Fyrstenberg and Matkowski were aiming to win their third Masters 1000 title together. They dropped to a 13-22 record in tour-level finals.
