Golf sensation Rory McIlroy is in Miami to support girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki as she looks to lift her first trophy at the Sony Ericsson Open. The second-ranked golfer, who won his first major at last year’s U.S. Open in record fashion, is preparing for next month’s Masters.
In traveling to various events to watch Wozniacki, McIlroy has gained perspective on how tennis events compare to golf tournaments. Speaking with SonyEricssonOpen.com, McIlroy said, “It’s definitely a little different. Tennis events have a different atmosphere.
“It’s packed into a smaller space, so there’s a little more buzz going on. It’s a nice change to be on the other side of the ropes, being a supporter. I’ve been to a lot of tennis tournaments the last few months and it’s just good to be here.”
The Northern Irishman recently ascended to World No. 1 two weeks ago after winning the Honda Classic, a tournament hosted near his American backyard. England’s Luke Donald reclaimed the top spot in the latest rankings this week.
“I have my U.S. base in Palm Beach, as the courses in the area are fantastic,” said McIlroy. “We play a tournament down here at Doral, which is good and the Honda Classic in Palm Beach, so there are certainly some great courses in South Florida.”
McIlroy accompanied Wozniacki to the WTA All Access hour at the tournament Tuesday. The Dane was fired a number of questions, ranging from her relationship with the golfer to her aspirations to succeed at the Olympics. Midway through her round table interview, it was revealed she won a ‘no junk food’ bet against McIlroy, who violated the agreement after indulging in his mother’s birthday cake. She was rewarded with a diamond bracelet, which she proudly displayed.

“He’s a very bad liar, so he actually told me straight away afterwards,” said Wozniacki. “He was like, ‘I feel guilty. ’”
“I said, ‘Don’t feel guilty. I feel great!’”
When asked if she would challenge McIlroy again, Wozniacki said, “I was thinking to make another one because it was too easy. He didn’t even last two weeks.”
