Trio Of American Women Successfully Qualify

A trio of American women booked their places into the main draw at the Sony Ericsson Open on Tuesday.

Sloane Stephens, the 10th seed, defeated Sania Mirza 6-2, 6-4 in 65 minutes to successfully qualify for the second year in a row.

Jamie Hampton and Madison Keys also won their final qualifying round matches. The 12th-seeded Hampton, coming off of a fourth-round showing in Indian Wells, dispatched 17th seed Mandy Minella 6-3, 6-2, while Keys rallied to defeat No. 19 seed Anastasia Rodionova 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Top seed Kateryna Bondarenko overcame Mirjana Lucic, defeating the former Wimbledon semi-finalist 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. The two combined to hit 27 double faults in the one hour and 56 minute encounter.

Alize Cornet battled past third-seeded Su-Wei Hsieh 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in two hours and 51 minutes to secure her main draw berth.

American Varvara Lepchenko, seeded fifth, lost to Valeria Savinykh 6-3, 6-2.
