The last few big finals Maria’s been in, the result hasn’t been too good for her. The scores in her losses at Wimbledon, the Australian Open, and Indian Wells were lopsided, and it took away from everything great she’d done in those tournaments. And the big question is whether she can mentally get past those devastating losses on the big stage. But Maria has got something inside her which is more than competition. She’s got the will to survive. How does a girl go through what she did—the operation that she had affects the serve, overhead, and forehand—and come all the way back to the top of the game? Every time you count her out, she’s right back in there.
It’s because she knows exactly who she is on the court. She knows she’s not the greatest runner in the world, she knows she can’t overwhelm her opponents with her serve. So instead of complaining about it, she finds the ways to win. It’s nothing against Radwanska, who whacks the ball incredibly well and who’s having a great year, but this Sony Ericsson final is going to be different than the ones that Maria lost. Maria likes Miami, Miami likes Maria, and the title is finally all hers for the winning.
