Jie Zheng of China took to the court with gusto today, defeating Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3 in the first round of the main draw. Zheng had taken time off from the tour to nurse injury, but has worked since February to regain the form that placed her in the semi-finals of the 2010 Australian Open. Zheng will play No. 4 Samantha Stosur in the second round.

Melanie Oudin prevailed in her first round match, defeating Germany’s Julia Goerges 7-5, 6-3. The 19-year-old American made noise in 2009 when she reached the quarter-finals of the US Open, but lost to Caroline Wozniacki. Oudin returns for her fourth appearance at the Sony Ericsson Open, and will play No.29 Daniela Hantuchova in the next round.

Wild card Petra Martic from Croatia defeated Germany’s Kristina Barrois 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the second round, where she will face No. 16 Maria Sharapova.

Anastasia Rodionova was one of the unlucky today, falling to Sweden’s Johanna Larssen, who will move on to play Li Na in the second round.

American wild card Madison Keys failed to advance, despite fighting back in the third set. Patty Schnyder defeated Keys 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(2).
