Melzer-Petzschner Make Strong Start

Miami, USA

Fourth seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner made a strong start to their doubles campaign at the Sony Ericsson Open on Friday. The Austrian-German duo, who will play each other in second-round singles action on Saturday, defeated wild cards Kei Nishikori and Donald Young 6-2, 6-3 in 55 minutes.

Israeli pairing Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram, who reached the semi-finals in Miami in 2006 (l. to Bryans), upset fifth-seeded Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 7-5, 6-4. They next will face Croatian tandem Marin Cilic and Ivan Ljubicic, who cut down the towering partnership of Kevin Anderson and Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 6-3.

The day’s other two matches were both decided in Match Tie-breaks. Oliver Marach and Janko Tipsarevic edged Pablo Andujar and Carlos Berlocq 6-7(7), 6-4, 10-8, while Michal Mertinak and Dick Norman battled past Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Albert Montanes 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-8.
