World No. 2 and defending champion Kim Clijsters won her first match of the Sony Ericsson Open over qualifier Anastasiya Yakimova. The mother of one and 2011 Australian Open champion closed out the match in 50 minutes, allowing Yakimova to take only two games.

Clijsters claimed the first set 6-1 and broke Yakimova to go up 4-1 in the second set. At 5-2, with Clijsters up 30-0, Yakimova won two points in a row to hold off a break, but Clijsters answered with two points to take the match 6-1, 6-1.

The No. 2 seed could face Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in the next round.

Agnieszka Radwanska also had a crushing debut at the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open, defeating Barbora Zahlavova Strycok 6-1, 6-0. Radwanska reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year, and could face 24th seed Maria Kirilenko.

Twelfth seed Petra Kvitova cruised past Varvara Lepchenko in 54 minutes, to advance to the third round. The Czech native came on strong, converting six break points to win 6-1, 6-2.

Dominika Cibulkova took three sets to defeat Timea Bacsinszky, 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 in the longest match of the morning.

Australian Jarmila Groth also advances, as opponent Yaroslava Shvedova faced another heartbreak today, retiring from the match in the second set, down 3-1. Shvedova suffered a left-thigh muscle strain, and previously nursed a knee injury this year, which forced her to withdraw from the Australian Open and Pattaya City. Groth will face either Dinara Safina or third  seed Vera Zvonareva.
