Miami, USA

Jarmila Groth advanced to the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open today after Yaroslava Shvedova retired from the match in the second set. The Australian citizen has one title to her name this year, playing her first season in the Top 30. This is her third appearance in Miami, and she took some time after her match to reflect on her year so far.

What attracts you to this tournament?
I think it’s a very unique tournament. First, it’s on the beach so it’s a very ‘party’ spot, and everybody likes to come and it’s sunny. It’s always nice conditions; a lot of people come and watch. I think just—it’s Miami, who wouldn’t want to come to Miami?

What has been a key part of breaking into the Top 30?
I think definitely no injuries help. The last couple of years, unfortunately, I had a lot of injuries that I always was [ranked] 50, then got injured and I’d drop out and have to start again from 140. Definitely no injury for a year, it’s real good it’s helpful. And then just working enough and getting older and more experienced, and knowing what I need, or what helps me/what doesn’t. Just being more consistent with practices and playing matches and tournaments in general.

You played World Team Tennis mixed doubles with your husband (Sam Groth). What was that experience like?
It was definitely a lot of fun. It was difficult; we had a really tough schedule as a team. We were flying every night from one side to the other. It wasn’t the easiest thing to do, but it was fun, we had a great team, and I had my husband with me, which was really nice. We played mixed doubles together before, so we know how it works. Definitely, I think we both enjoyed it.
