Day One qualifying rounds for the women’s draw saw a number of upsets and positive advances for some Americans.

Jelena Dokic, the No. 1 seed and long-time member of the WTA Tour, defeated Tatjana Malek in three sets. Malek took the first set 7-5, but Dokic came back to win the match 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Dokic, once ranked No. 4 in the world, dropped off for a few years, but has made a statement in 2011, winning her sixth WTA title at Kuala Lumpur and defeating Francesca Schiavone.

Wild card Michelle Larcher de Brito upset the third-seeded qualifier Magdalena Rybarikova. Larcher de Brito lost the first set 2-6, but battled back to a second set score of 7-5. She claimed the final set 6-0.

Christina McHale of the United States defeated wild card Carina Whitthoeft in two sets to advance, along with American Jamie Hampton, who upset the second seed, Rebecca Marino, of Canada. Hampton had a relatively easy win in the first set, dropping only one game, and won the match despite Marino’s efforts and a 7-5 set. Dokic and McHale will meet in the next round.

Wild card Sloane Stephens dropped the opening set against No. 4 seed Evgeniya Rodina but won the next two sets, taking the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Her next opponent is Australian Sophie Ferguson, who defeated Italian Alberta Brianti.

Americans Vania King and Alison Riske were unable to advance. King, the No. 14 seed, went down to Russian Vesna Manasleva 6-2, 6-1 while Riske fell to fifth seeded Shuai Zhang 6-4, 6-4. Wild card Beatrice Capra also failed to proceed in the draw, losing to No. 7 seed Lucie Hradecka 6-3, 6-1.

Kirsten Flipkens, Arantxa Rus, Yvonne Meusburger, Eva Birnerova, Ksenia Pervak, Junri Namigata, Renata Voracova, Nuria Llagostera-Vives, and Anna Tatishvili also advanced Monday.
