Bhupathi-Paes Through To QFs

Miami, USA

Third seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes reached the quarter-finals at the Sony Ericsson Open for the first time as a team with a 7-6(5), 6-4 win over Spaniards Marc Lopez and David Marrero on Tuesday in Miami.

Bhupathi and Paes had fallen in the second round in their team’s previous three appearances at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament, from 1997-99, though they have achieved success with different partners. The two Indian veterans reached the final last year in Miami, with Paes and Lukas Dlouhy prevailing over Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi.

Sixth seeds Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic also won their second-round match Tuesday, edging Xavier Malisse and Jamie Murray 6-7(4), 6-3, 10-5. Malisse had captured the Masters 1000 doubles title two weeks ago in Indian Wells alongside Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov, defeating Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka in the final.
